Thirty-Nine

In harmony with the floating tao,

the sky is clear and vast,

the earth is solid and stable,

the spirits are lively and strong,

the valley is fertile and green.

Form and formless work cheerfully in

tandem.

Aligned with nature,

our wholeness makes us what we are.

Out of step with nature,

the sky becomes polluted,

the earth becomes sickly,

the creatures die-off in mass extinctions,

the unity shatters.

Those attuned with basic humility

view the manifest with compassion.

Appreciating the unmanifest,

they appreciate the whole.

Their daily practice is surrender.

Humble, they do not shine

like diamonds.

Willing, they are shaped by spontaneous currents.

Unhurried and enduring;

like worn-gray river stones.
